Inkside

Inkside is a learning tool. You paste your notes or ask ChatGPT about a topic, and it hands you a tidy handwritten study sheet: headings, key terms, formulas, tables and labelled diagrams, laid out like the best notes in class, as an editable Goodnotes notebook or a PDF.

Under the hood it's an AI-native document engine, not a font pasted onto PDF pages: a declarative graphics and document-rendering system with its own language, geometric engine, handwriting renderer, and native Goodnotes exporter.

Core capabilities

How the engine works

  1. Natural language / AI — “Draw a plant cell, label its organelles and explain photosynthesis.”
  2. .inkside document language — text, layouts, formulas, diagrams, semantic objects.
  3. Geometry and layout engine — coordinates, stencils, collision avoidance, occlusion, labeling.
  4. Unified Page / Stroke model — pen samples, widths, colors, opacity, seeded imperfections.
  5. Exporters — Goodnotes, PDF, SVG.

Every handwritten letter, plotted curve, diagram outline, and label leader eventually becomes the same kind of Stroke object. Exporters operate on this shared representation.

Goodnotes receives individual editable ink strokes, while colored washes and filled areas are placed into a PDF background.

The .inkside language

Inkside uses a human-readable, Markdown-inspired document language.

# The Plant Cell

Plants use photosynthesis to convert
light energy into chemical energy.

$$6CO_2 + 6H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2$$

```draw
size: 100 x 70
title: Plant Cell
labels: sides
cell = plantcell at (50, 35) size 90 x 60
label cell.nucleus "Nucleus"
```

The important innovation is that the AI specifies what should be drawn, while the engine calculates how to draw it.

The draw scene language

Inkside's diagram engine supports geometric primitives, SVG paths, reusable stencils, nested object references, repetition, random scattering, and automatic labeling. For example:

mito = mitochondrion at (30, 40) size 12 x 6
label mito "Mitochondrion"

scatter 20 dot r 0.4 in cell avoid nucleus

The language understands spatial relationships such as cell.nucleus.top, enabling labels and connections without hardcoding every position.

Deterministic rendering and editing

Inkside uses seeded randomness for handwritten imperfections, organic shapes, and procedural diagrams. Identical source and seed produce identical strokes, and this property is tested.

Inkside Studio does diff-based source editing with AI. The workflow is Write → Validate → Render → Edit → Re-render. Rather than regenerate an entire notebook, an AI can modify a specific part of the source.

The bigger picture

Inkside changes how a study sheet gets made. Writing one by hand takes an evening; with Inkside it takes a minute, and the time goes into learning the material instead of copying it out. What comes back still looks and feels like a handwritten sheet you can highlight, annotate and revise from.

Technically it's more than an AI handwriting generator: it is a programmable handwritten-document platform. Its most important differentiator is not the font or the ability to export a notebook — it's the architecture: an AI can write a structured document, validate it, render it into native ink, and modify its source without rebuilding everything from scratch.

In one sentence: Inkside is a compiler for AI-generated handwritten documents, combining a declarative scene language, deterministic vector graphics, and native Goodnotes ink export.
